. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on kutv channel 2. breaking news on the bay bridge a major back-up right now after a spill prompts crews to close down throw lanes of the upper deck. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello again everyone i'm heather holmes and we begin with that breaking news happening on the bay bridge. there were three lanes of the upper deck of the bridge blocked by some kind of spill. this is the westbound direction heading into san francisco. all of those red lines you see

on the top. within the last 20 minutes the lanes were cleared and re- opened and as you can see it's caused a major back-up on the span and at the toll plaza. take a look at that back-up there. drivers, you are expectf warned to expect delays trying to get into san francisco tonight. now to the latest on the fight over foie gras. a legal loophole has put the delicacy back on the menu and protesters back on the attack with one of them getting arrested. it all happened tonight in san francisco. ktvu's debora villone to explain how foie gras is being served despite a state ban. >> reporter: ken this could be contraband, almost anywhere else. foie gras slider served at the presidio social club that says its sketch from state law because it's on federal property.

the cities had a few other represents on federal lau land, but so far none are creating a flap like this one. live in san francisco, debora villone, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on another restaurant, allegedly trying to find a way aroutine foie gras ban. this restaurant was the target of a demonstration by animal rights activists. chefs say that they are serving liver pate as part of their $130 tasting menu. but the restaurant says it's not violating the law since it's been offered free to customers and not being sold. the highway patrol is questioning a woman tonight after investigators say she was involved in a fiery crash that claims the lave santa rosa man. the accident happened just west of the irwin lane in santa rosa around 4:45 this afternoon. highway patrol investigators

say woman was apparently chasing a motorcyclist at high- speed following some sort of domestic dispute. at one point she hit a lexus and then allegedly lost control of her car and hit a triumph. the triumph overturned and caught fire. the driver of that triumph, a 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at scene. investigators say alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the incident. the victim's name has not yet been released. a student pilot managed to walkway from a crash-landing in novato this afternoon with just a cut on his arm. this is what his plane looked like when emergency crews arrived at scene of the accident of the crash before 4:00 this afternoon. we first reported today at 6:00, that student pilot based on the gnoss field airport in novato. according to the manager on duty the pilot reported having some kind of engine trouble. his plane skid into the mashland nearby and flipped. >> there were several other pilots in the area that either heard or witnessed the incident. rushed over, lifted the rear of the aircraft

up off the ground and that allowed pilot to exit the aircraft with only a minor injury to his hand. >> the plane is an rv7a, the airport manager says it's an specialtial plane that the pilot assembled himself. federal aviation investigators interviewed that pilot over the phone for their investigation. airport operations at gnoss field were back to normal about an hour after the incident. we're getting word tote that that fire burning near auburn in the sierra foothills has destroyed its first home the fire has burned about 2,000 acres in placer county and still threatening more than a dozen hopes. janine de la vega reports. the fire has burned more than 950 acres and growing calfire says it's only 20% contained. >> reporter: the threat of fire prompted

governor brown to add five blackhawk essex porter helicopters from the california national guard to aid in the fight to drop water on the flames. a former firefighter tells us that the pink paint hornets makes the aircrafts more visible wheel they fly through the billowing smoke. >> they are going to help us drop fire on the hot spot spotts and because the fire is burning in such a remote area, the helicopters are critical now. >> reporter: while much the firefight is in the air, the number of personnel on the ground has grown to nearly 22,000ment they are concerned about the people live living in the nearby county of col tax and forest hill. fire crews from crocket,ing moreag, contra costa county, richmond and el cerrito are all here, ready to be positioned near homes that are threatened. >> we're excited and want to be here. we're willing to help. >> reporter: the challenge that they face is the steep, rugged terrain where the fire is burning. >> it's very difficult to get in there and actually put it out using hand lines. it's unknown how long the local

firefighters will be gone, but fire officials say usually after seven daze the firefighters will rotate out and be replaced. janine de la vegaa, ktvu chars. santa cruz police released a sketch of a man suspected of starting a fire at a restaurant storage shed. arsonist is described as african-american, in his mid to late 30s, 180 pounds with an average build i'm witness says the man came up to him outside the restaurant on church street around 2:20 thursday morning and said, "i am sorry." >> unthen took off on a 10- speed bike. that is when the witness noticed fire and called for help. oakland firefighters made quick work of a one alarm fire at the 3-unit building. fire officials say the building was vacant and the fire was controlled in 15 minutes, but the damage was estimated at $80,000 the cause of the fire is under investigation.

firefighters in the south bay had a challenge on their hands fighting a stubborn fire at a lumberyard. fire broke out at monterey and blanchard rhoad. they to truck in water from down the street since there was no hydrant nearby. berkeley police are hoping to hear from points about an accident that killed a 65-year- old professor as he rode his bike yesterday afternoon. the truck driver told investigators he didn't think he had hit anyone and police say it is possible that he was not involved at all. at ward winning profess was a

visiting lecturer at uc berkeley from hebrew university of verse lum. activists from jerusalem. activists were on hand to protest the new jail to be built in redwood city. as ktvu's john sasaki found they are not the only ones against this project. >> no more cages we need jobs. >> reporter: it was a mall, but passionate protest against san mateo's soon to be built jail. >> people can achieve jail because that is the option that is left to thim. >> reporter: protesters say the $155 million to build the jail and $40 million to run it annually should be use instead to help improve the lives of young people. >> i think if they are doing this that we're committing the resources that we need to educate our children to the confinement of their parents. >> reporter: jail has been in the works for seven years and the county board of supervisors approved it because of serious jail overcrowding. board president says the county is always looking for ways to reduce the jail population. >> we want to put in programs,

. developing news now out bay, police are searching for i guard who opened fire on a police officer. the shoot led to a chase if benicia, where police have continuing their search for the gunman. ktvu's janine de la vega has the latest information for us. >> reporter: ken, this is still a very active scene. tension is running high among benicia police. solana county sheriff's deputies are out here and so are benicia police because they think a gunman is on the loose, somewhere here. we're told he shot at a benicia police officer, and then tried to carjack somebody here who

lives in this neighborhood. now let's take a look at the video that we took earlier today. you can see there are two bullet holes in the front windshield of a benicia police car. this all started around 6:00 p.m. tonight. we're told by authorities that a male suspect opened fire at an officer at rose drive and tyne court in benicia. we don't know the motive and we're told that power is not hurt, but authorities say the suspect fled and turned up at the complex here at benicia highlands and then tried to carjack somebody who apparently lives here and now they are looking for that gunman. there is a s.w.a.t. team out here, again as well as solano county sheriffs and other police agencies. we see them up and down cambridge, the street we're on now and they are spread throughout the city, along 780, right off of the columbus parkway exit. right now back out here live at

which his campaign says are exactly the same as they were before the ads ." the environmental protection agency has dropped a rule that would have created huge livestock farms to report on how they handle waste. the epa announced that they would collect the information from other sources. concentrated animal feeding operation with generate more waste and environmentalists pushed for the proposed law to enforce the clean water act. there are reports tonight that former penn state football coach joe paterno secretly negotiated an early retirement package after he was subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury investigating jerry sandusky. the new york times reports the package includes millions of dollars in benefits for his surviving family that continue for years. montero's family says that penn state suggested the retirement package and some of those

. we want to update you on that developing story on the bay bridge. all leans of upper deck of the bridge are now open. three lanes were blocked earlier tonight by some kind of spill just before treasure island. spill has been cleared and despite lanes being open, as you can see, there is still a major back-up at the toll plaza. if you are in the city waiting for some friends to show up to your house and you are wondering where they are, they are probably sitting right there right now and if you talk to them on the telephone, say go to the san mateo bridge, you might get into the city faster. a 3-year-old girl in east bay is recovering after a two story fall. the accident happened in morning at an apartment complex on fremont boulevard in fremont. the girl, whose name is being withheld fell when a window screen gave way. she plunged to the ground and her father climbed down to

rescue her. amazingly authorities say she only suffered bumps and bruises. she was taken to children's hospital in oakland for observation. >> a free first aid training session in the east bay was aimed at teaching bystanders how to cope with the crisis organizers say it's important for people to know what to do before an ambulance arrives. >> what we do is that we go out and we teach our people on how to save each other rather than get shot, stabbed, any bleeding, trauma, strokes, seizures and things of that nature. >> they plan to offer more of the emergency triage training throughout the year. word tonight that police have arrest a 34-year-old san rafael man on child molestation charges. san falafel police arrested ruiz on thursday. investigators say ruiz live named home as his alleged victim an 11-year-old girl. ruiz is in custody in lieu of $1 million bail. now to the latest on the

search for south bay teenager sierra lamar. monday will mark four months since the 15-year-old disappeared, and as ktvu's lorraine blanco tells us that voters were out against with today and this time they had a second mission r as dedicated volunteers emback, on another search effort for 15-year-old sierra lamar. her mother marlene is helping other parents protect their little ones. it's a different world now that we live in. i just feel it's too easy for them to get hurt and too easy for them to be taken away or something horrific happen to them. >> reporter: andrea paine got emotionaz as they get their photos and fingerprints taken by the klaaskids foundation. >> considering where we are and what happened here oat morgan hill. >> we utilize high-tech equipment and it's so sophisticate questioned get

. well, some major temperature swing across the bay area over the last days and that will continue this weekend and into next week. right now on live stormtracker 2, i have the radar already to

show you, not here in the bay area, but to our south and east. some showers and thunderstorms out towards the vegas area. you could see a little bit of activity in that part of the region right now. we have have low clouds and fog banked up to the shoreline, heading into the bay. reports of overcast for san francisco oakland and hayward. so against once again the clouds a bit factor in our forecast. you can see the temperatures maxing out in the 70s inland. san francisco, 64 and san josi at 81 degrees. forecast headlines for tonight we have areas of fog still a bit of a breeze out there. tomorrow, a touch warmer, but then we go the other direction for monday and tuesday, with the sun-cloud mix as a weak weather system moves in the north. first thing sunday morning, areas of fog targeting the coast and also right around the bay. so no big change here's. this is the weather system that

has been cooling off the bay area basically yesterday. and temperatures recovered today. as this scoots out to the north and east, we're going to warm things up. most areas 2-5 degrees from today's highs. here is the key change as we head into monday and tuesday, this very cool weather still for this time of year approaches northern california. you can see the result, we cool things off into monday, significantly by tuesday, warmest locations only in the low to mid-70s. we're also going to ramp up the low clouds and also some higher clouds moving in as well. here is our forecast model showing you some of the overcast first thing sunday morning. coast side and also right around the bay, towards monterey as well. as we put this into motion in the afternoon hours, clouds clearing back and, in fact, we could have a few breaks for part of the coast. that red contour links with the 90s inland. the extreme warm end is around the 90-degree manch oakland 72 and lots of sunshine out towards livermore. san josi 83 and san francisco
